The Prodigy
While it stars no one you’ve ever heard of and was the debut film of writer/director William Kaufman, The Prodigy (2005) delivers some unexpected action. In the film’s dark world, thug Truman Fisher is the closest thing we have to a protagonist. His troubles start when an almost otherworldly killer named Rains starts targeting him as his replacementin other words, he seeks Truman as a “prodigy.”The film is highly regarded for its combat scenes, especially the martial arts scenes with Holt Boggs as Truman Fisher. Amazon reviewer R. Garrett (a martial-arts instructor in real life) praised Boggs as well as stunt advisor Ron Balicki for the realism of these fights. The film was Boggs’ first starring role, and also his first (and only) writing credit. The role of Rains is played by Glen Vorhis, an actor who seems as mysterious as his character. His only other credit to date is in the 2009 horror film Hunger. However, he plays his role well here, bringing a strange power and gravitas to the killer. For fans of action, crime, or thriller movies, The Prodigy comes highly recommended as a unique and well-crafted film.
